Selina Mainali is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science from IAAS Rampur Campus, Tribhuvan University (TU). Her passion for environmental sustainability stems from her upbringing in a rural community, where she witnessed the detrimental impact of improper waste management on their surroundings. This firsthand experience ignited her drive to seek innovative solutions to address this pressing issue.
Her OMLAS project idea focuses on sustainable waste management in rural areas, employing various techniques such as producing biochar from agricultural residues, conducting vermicomposting with household waste, and utilizing human and cattle urine as natural fertilizers. Additionally, she plans to blend biochar with vermicompost and urine to create a nutrient-rich fertilizer, aiming to enhance soil fertility and water retention. This comprehensive approach aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate change impacts, and promote agricultural sustainability. The project will be implemented in Khairahani, Chitwan, Nepal, directly benefiting local farmers and residents by improving soil health and agricultural productivity. She aims to address key Sustainable Development Goals; SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 13: Climate Action.
